Job Type: Charity, WordPress
Client Location: Scotland
Launch Date: April 2026
After successfully delivering the sdf.org.uk project, the team at Scottish Drugs Forum approached Nexus with a new project brief as part of a competitive tender process. Having operated a service directory on behalf of the Scottish Government for many years, providing a vital resource for people across Scotland seeking drugs and alcohol support services, the existing system had become unstable, unreliable and outdated. With a requirement to develop a modern content management system (CMS) directory while migrating all existing data across, Nexus entered the tender process and was subsequently awarded the project.
The project began with a series of meetings to discuss the migration of existing content. Due to the condition and limitations of the previous system, direct access to the directory was unavailable and there was no functionality to export the existing listings database. While challenging, this presented the client with an opportunity to review and improve the quality of their data before migration. After several weeks, SDF provided Nexus with a comprehensive multi-column spreadsheet that would become the foundation of the migration process. While our technical team focused on the structure and migration of the data, our design team worked closely with SDF to create the visual identity and user experience for the new platform.
To meet the client’s requirement for a fully manageable CMS, WordPress was selected as the core platform. We paired this with the Listeo directory framework, heavily customising both the theme and underlying functionality to align fully with SDF’s branding and operational requirements.
Using a combination of Python scripting, advanced Excel formulation and WordPress CLI tooling, our technical team successfully migrated and structured a database of over 480 unique service locations. This marked a key milestone in the project and allowed us to present the first full working build of the website to the client.
While the initial feedback was extremely positive, additional refinement work was required. Nexus subsequently developed more than 200 lines of bespoke code to alter parts of Listeo’s default language, functionality and user flows. These customisations ensured the final platform delivered a user experience that was more suitable and sensitive for the nature of the service and its users.
Following a final review and approval process, Nexus registered drugandalcoholservices.scot and migrated the completed website onto the new domain. This final stage allowed us to implement the finishing touches, including the integration of a Cookie Consent Management Platform (CCMP) and Google Analytics 4, ensuring visitor tracking and reporting could operate in a privacy-focused and GDPR-compliant manner.
Ahead of the late-April 2026 launch, Nexus also prepared detailed support documentation and delivered additional training sessions to ensure the SDF team were fully comfortable managing the platform internally before handover. Today, Nexus continues to support drugandalcoholservices.scot through our private LiteSpeed hosting platform alongside our ongoing maintenance, monitoring and support services.
